The Tattooed Map - Barbara Hodgson 2.5 stars, the book becomes much less interesting after Lydia's disappearance
The Black Spider - Jeremias Gotthelf, H.M. Waidson A one dimensional morality play with the following moral: it is better to die suffering than to make a deal with the devil.
Epitaph in Rust (Laser Books 47) - Tim Powers, Frank Kelly Freas, Roger Elwood What I liked about this book - it mentions William Ashbless from [b:The Anubis Gates|142296|The Anubis Gates|Tim Powers|https://d202m5krfqbpi5.cloudfront.net/books/1344409006s/142296.jpg|2193115]What I disliked about this book - 99 44⁄100% of it.
Total Eclipse - John Brunner I first read this book in the summer of 1995.
We Who Are About To... - Joanna Russ This is an at best mediocre book with a dreadful introduction. Delaney mentions the Cold Equations and then quotes a reviewer who clearly has not read the story.
Mortal Lock - Andrew Vachss liked:GhostwriterBloodlinesVeil's Visit (with Joe R. Lansdale) - I have made a note to check out this series. They're All AlikeA Piece of the CityAs the Crow FliesBlood TestProfileOK:Sure ThingPassage to ParadiseChoice of WeaponsHalf-Breed - this story was previously published in Hard Looks. I like it better as a comic.PigSeeding the GroundLast RightsPostwar BoomCorazónSaviorBlood Orchidnot for me:Dead ReliableScreenplay: Underground
Netsuke - Rikki Ducornet A sociopathic psychotherapist makes a game out of seducing his patients. I found it impossible to empathize with the narrator.
H.R. Giger's Necronomicon - H.R. Giger, Clive Barker 2.5 stars, the library copy was missing pages 18-32
The Well of the Unicorn - mentioned in http://www.sfwa.org/2005/01/on-thud-and-blunder/
Weird Detectives: Recent Investigations - Simon R. Green, Dana Cameron, Jonathan Maberry, Carrie Vaughn, Caitlín R. Kiernan, Richard Parks, Joe R. Lansdale, Charlaine Harris, William Meikle, Simon Clark, Sarah Monette, Lillian Stewart Carl, P.N. Elrod, Elizabeth Bear, Bradley Denton, Richard Bowes, Paula Guran, J The Key by Ilsa J. Blick - this didn't leave much of an impressionThe Nightside, Needless to Say by Simon R. Green - I had already read this so I skipped it.The Adakian Eagle by Bradley Denton - This story makes me want to learn more about Alaska during WWII.Love Hurts by Jim Butcher - OK. I don't follow the Harry Dresden series. The Case of Death and Honey by Neil Gaiman - this didn't leave much of an impression.Cryptic Coloration by Elizabeth Bear - I give this extra points for the ending. The Necromancer’s Apprentice by Lillian Stewart Carl - blahThe Case of the Stalking Shadow by Joe R. Lansdale - Good, I should read some of his other works.Hecate’s Golden Eye by P.N. Elrod - I had already read this so I skipped it.Defining Shadows by Carrie Vaughn - I hate this story. Killing a manananggal (Filipino vampire that causes miscarriages) isn't murder. If anything, it's like putting down a rabid dog.Mortal Bait by Richard Bowes - blahStar of David by Patricia Briggs - I had already read this so I skipped it.Imposters by Sarah Monette - not for meDeal Breaker by Justin Gustainis - OK, was worth a reread.Swing Shift by Dana Cameron - I dislike the Fangborn series. The Beast of Glamis by William Meikle - OKSignatures of the Dead by Faith Hunter - I had already read this so I skipped it.Like a Part of the Family by Jonathan Maberry - OK. Adijan and Her Genie - L.J. Baker This is a surprisingly touching story with an unusual love interest.
Nick and Tesla's High-Voltage Danger Lab: A Mystery with Electromagnets, Burglar Alarms, and Other Gadgets You Can Build Yourself - Steve Hockensmith, Bob Pflugfelder (I received this book for free through Goodreads First Reads)
The Vet's Daughter - Barbara Comyns A young woman is abused by her father and others, leaves for a caretaking position, and then performs a miracle and dies. This is easily one of the worst books I have read this year.
W, or the Memory of Childhood - Georges Perec, David Bellos This book is split between tedious autobiographical snippets and describing the workings of a fictional society that resembles the WWII death camps.
Dinosaur Beach - Keith Laumer Read [b:Bones of the Earth|243862|Bones of the Earth|Michael Swanwick|https://d202m5krfqbpi5.cloudfront.net/books/1298478097s/243862.jpg|1737187] instead.
